Mods and “premium APK”

Subscriptions, limits and ads are checked on the company's servers on every request. A modified APK can repaint the Premium button, but the server still knows there is no subscription. What a mod definitely changes is who gets access to your phone.

The main risk

A “premium APK” installs outside the store with normal app permissions: your chats, contacts and notifications go to the file's author, not Chai Research. The account can be terminated under the EULA.
