Why we do not count stars
The gap between 4.32 in the App Store and 3.6 in Google Play with comparable audiences says more about different publics and different ad experiences than about a “true” rating. We rely on what can be checked.
Eight sides
Ten million downloads
1M+ daily users by the company's claim, 278 thousand App Store ratings. Community and catalog are the strongest side.
Legal entity and address in the EULA
Chai Research Corp., Palo Alto, e-mail and phone in the Google Play listing. Minus: prices are not published.
Safety Center and a crisis protocol
Anonymous reporting, mature-content filters, 18+. Better worked out than most.
Voice is claimed
“Authentic voices” in the App Store. Photos and video in chat are not claimed.
Free, but with ads
Limits are not published, some regions need a subscription. Ads are part of the product.
No price list, purchases up to $899.99
Subscriptions only in-app; Google Play shows the purchase range. The 3.6 rating is partly about this.
Phone only, English only
No web version, no localised interface, payment only through the store.
No numbers, complaints instead
Even Ultra subscribers write about forgetting; the context size is not published.
How to read reviews of this service
- “It forgets” — check the author's plan; there are no official memory figures for anyone.
- “Nothing but ads” — that is the free mode; the complaint is true but describes the product model.
- “It used to be free” — reviews record the shift from ads to paid features; mind the review date.
- A useful review names the plan, region and date. Praise or anger without details is not worth reading.
Three questions before paying
Are you fine with an English interface. Will you pay without seeing the price on a website. Do you need a browser chat — Chai has none.
The case for Chai
Big, proven, with worked-out safety and a living community. For a mobile, English chat Chai is fine.
The case for HoneyChat
If you need a browser, no ads, open prices and no account — HoneyChat covers exactly that.
